Mariannhill rugga team aims for greatness

The development side has received support and guidance from both the Hillcrest Villagers' Youth Rugby Club as well as the KZNRU.

THE KwaNdengezi Kings rugby team, based in Mariannhill, was proud to host its second annual awards ceremony within its community recently.

The development side, which is under the mentorship and guidance of the KZN Rugby Union (KZNRU), was excited to host its sister club, the Hillcrest Villagers’ Youth Rugby Club (HVYRC).

For the past three years HVYRC has played a major role in the growth and guidance of boys who play for the club. They have not only helped the young athletes become excellent rugby players but also helped a few boys receive the opportunity for scholarships in top tier schools.

The relationship between these two teams share one thing in common, the love and passion for rugby and education.

The KwaNdengezi Kings’ mission is to give hope, build courage and create opportunities for excellence through rugby for the youth.

Andile Cele, the club’s head coach, said the KZNRU development programme has gone beyond the call of duty to help secure its deserving players with a better education and more opportunities to help them make it in the sport of rugby.

“This was an auspicious occasion which left an indelible mark on all of the guests and attendees. Excitement and gratitude filled the young players as award after award was handed out,” said Andile.

“A special moment was observed for the founder of the KwaNdengezi Kings rugby side, Archie Bhengu who, in his absence, was awarded the honorary award for his amazing contribution to the growth and development of the youth of KwaNdengezi.”

Andile shared his heartfelt gratitude for the continued support provided by the HVYRC and its chairman, Natascha Kretzel, and the KZNRU. He encouraged the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture, the youth development office, local ward councillors and businesses to join together and help build better facilities for the youth to play sport.

“And assist in building the KwaNdengezi Kings rugby team, so that one day we too can be established and compete with clubs in the top divisions,” said Andile.

His wish is to one day partner with local businesses, departments and municipality heads who would help children with scholarships at top schools.
