Dogs found tied to a tree, rescued by Kloof SPCA gets adopted

The owner of the two dogs was in direct contravention of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 and, armed with a warrant, the dogs were taken into the Kloof and Highway SPCA's custody.

TWO dogs that were rescued by the Kloof and Highway SPCA from a home in the Upper Highway area, due to mistreatment, were re-homed on Saturday.

On 4 January this year, the local non-profit organisation received a report from a concerned resident about two dogs that were tied to a tree on short ropes.

Inspector Petra Abrams and field officer, Petros Simamane, went to the property and issued a warning to the owner to untie the dogs.

“There was no reason for them to be tied up in a fully fenced property. The owner was warned that failure to do so would result in further action,” said the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Brigitte Ferguson.

Abrams returned the following day and noted that the owner had not complied with the warning.

“The dogs were still tied to short ropes and they were also without water and shelter. All three offences are in direct contravention of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. Immediate action had to be taken as the situation had worsened,” said Ferguson.

On 6 January, Abrams obtained a warrant to remove Rusty and Otis from their home and place them into the care of the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

“Rusty and Otis were overwhelmed by their new surroundings and took some time getting used to going for walks, being loved, having a warm bed and getting treats,” said Ferguson.

The two dogs spent 54 days at the Kloof and Highway SPCA before they were adopted together and picked up by their new owner on Saturday.

“Thank you to the caring member of the public who opened this investigation by reporting this cruelty,” said Ferguson.
