Laughter keeps Waterfall couple’s connection strong

Bob and Merle Lynch celebrated their diamond anniversary.

WHAT started as a holiday romance turned into a beautiful love story for Bob and Merle Lynch who celebrated their diamond anniversary on 27 February.

Merle was on holiday with her friends while Bob was with his family.

“I arrived late and was at the hotel reception and saw Merle in the lounge and said to myself, ‘there’s the girl for me’. One of her friends pulled me inside and introduced us to each other.

For about three years Bob had to travel to Pretoria from Johannesburg every weekend to visit the love of his life before tying the knot on 27 February 1960 at St Patrick’s Church.

The welcoming couple, who both have a great sense of humour, said not knowing how to say goodbye to each is the reason they are still together, 60 years later.

“I love my wife because she is who she is and we have lots of laughs together,” said Bob.

According to Merle, as a married couple you need to act like adults and not argue over small things. One of the things I love about my husband is that he helps a lot around the house, he cooks and cleans.”

The Waterfall couple advised young couples to stay true to who and what they are.

“People are different, what works for us might not work for others. People must just hang in there, as much as there will be hard times but there is a lots of good times,” said Bob.
