John Drew retires after 25 years at Kearsney

John Drew has dedicated 25 years of his life to teaching.

JOHN Drew has retired from Kearsney College after dedicating 25 years of his life to teaching, coaching, mentoring and fulfilling house duties at the school.

A compassionate, loyal and gentle man, he was appointed to Kearsney in January 1995, shortly after the first democratic elections, where he has taught geography to Grades 8-12 and history to Grades 8-10.

After graduating, Drew started his teaching career at John Ross College in Richards Bay and thereafter at DHS before he joined Kearsney College a quarter of a century ago.

A nimble and talented sportsman, as a schoolboy Drew played for DHS’ first teams in cricket and hockey, made Nuffield Week cricket and Natal schools’ hockey, Natal University X1 and SA Universities Cricket Week, while also playing hockey for Southern Cape, Northern Natal, Zululand and Natal Country Districts.

He is also a notable coach in both sports codes, having coached South African cricketers Dale Benkenstein, Lance Klusener and Kyle Abbott and in 1997 took Kearsney’s 1st hockey team to its first win over Maritzburg College.

He and his wife, Shelley, a teacher at St Mary’s, have two children, Tatum and Scott, both of whom have followed in their parents’ footsteps and have gone into teaching.
