Durban artist’s Gqom beats beam for 031 awards

Lindo Bhengu is currently promoting his latest single, Shona Malanga. It's available to stream on all platforms.

WATERFALL-based artist, Lindo Bhengu, known as Cheesenator BTM, has been nominated for the 031 awards in the Amapiano/Gqom Artist of the Year category.

Fresh from his new single, Shona Malanga, winning the award would help steer Bhengu’s career in the right direction.

“It will mean a lot to win the award as the prizes they give away to the top three winners is a marketing budget which means I’ll be able to promote my brand even further,” said the nominee.

Bhengu appreciated these awards as they give recognition to the city’s most hard-working, underground artists.

“I think they are more like a practise for bigger music awards as this is the phase where you see if your fan base is ready to hold you down for bigger things so yeah, the exposure they are giving to up-and-coming musicians is appreciated,” Bhengu said.

The young artist is following the world-renowned, Gqom DJ/Producer, DJ Lag.

“I’m pushing our very own sound which is Gqom and the plan is getting the world to notice it, following in the footsteps of DJ Lag who recently co-produced a Gqom beat for Beyoncé so that’s the direction I’m taking for international standard on gigs and features.”

Bhengu has big expectations for his new single, Shona Malanga.

“I’m gunning for everything, man, with my upcoming single. I remember when I received the beat from House Masters mid-last year. I told them to not give this beat to anyone, this is our ticket and they trusted me to record the song. They trusted me with it for more than five months until I decided I’m gonna put it out as a single.”

Bhengu is inspired by what he sees in his everyday life when writing his music and has ambitions to collaborate with the biggest names in the local music industry. I’d love to collaborate with rapper, Kwesta as he delivers pretty well on Gqom.”

The 031 awards will be held on 25 July this year.
