My Wave: Astrology’s influence on the youth

Millenial astrology fans use social media as a platform to vent and educate fellow users about astrology. They also use astrology as a guide to navigate certain aspects of life.

THROUGH memes shared on social media, blogs, pages and popular culture, it’s safe to say that astrology has a significant influence on youth culture, globally. Being one with your spirituality is a great thing and people like that tend to have an interesting outlook on how the world works.

Admittedly, I find astrology interesting because it has been around for generations, from finding it on the back pages of your newspaper to finding it all over your social media timelines.

It’s not a new phenomenon but its circulation and its influence is as trendy as anything young people consume.

Astrology studies patterns, relationships, our planets and stars in motion as well as our birth charts and all of these elements are used to find meaning.

Although its been around for longer than I can imagine, Millenials and Gen-Zers have made astrology their own.

It’s a way of life for some and a personality trait for others.

What I’ve learnt from astrology is that it’s inspirational, it gives us the opportunity to understand the world better.

Affirmations, readings, horoscopes, the celestial clock, understanding yourself, your relationships and love-life are the key elements in astrology for young people.

There are people out there who determine someone’s worth by reading their birth charts – especially regarding dating because people want to gauge their compatibility with others.

This practice is strange because you’re closing off an opportunity when some random astrology blog told you that you’re not compatible with, for example, a Virgo.

A lot of young astrology fans make the mistake of ruling people out or judging someone by ‘astrologizing’ them.

As intriguing as the practice of astrology is, it’s a bit silly to completely ignore someone’s humanity because you’ve had a bad, isolated incident with their star sign.

The practice of grouping people into categories is strange to me, especially in astrology when popular elements like daily horoscopes give basic and sometimes predictions that anyone can relate to. And, although many of us stigmatise astrology without making the effort to deeply understand the nuances, I believe it’s perfectly appropriate for the internet culture we’re in.

Meme pages, discussions of personality traits of people in all zodiac signs and motivational astrology pages on Instagram have been a driving force behind the culture over the last few years.

People joke about experiencing something because ‘mercury is in retrograde’ is always a trending topic and using astrology as pick-up line is my favourite because men stigmatise astrology as something that’s linked to femininity.

My only problem with astrology is people excusing their bad behaviour because they come from a certain zodiac sign, “Sorry I told my friends about your secret, I’m a Gemini so I can’t help that I gossip a lot.”

Don’t be an astrology fan who doesn’t take accountability for his/her poor actions.
