A POLICE captain, reported to be based at the Public Order Police Unit in Mariannhill, was shot dead outside his home in Oberreuter Road, New Germany, last night (Thursday, 23 January).

The policeman died on arrival at the hospital.
According to a resident who wished to remain anonymous, the man was walking to his house when he was gunned down.
The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.
This is the second officer to be gunned down in New Germany. On 24 December, a Pinetown constable was found slumped over in the driver’s seat of a state-owned Quantum minibus with a gunshot wound to his head in Ridge Road, New Germany.
The member’s pistol and a R5 Rifle were still in the Quantum.
In a separate incident, another policeman was shot and critically wounded on Friday morning (24 January) on Winter Avenue in the Berea area.
Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed that the policeman had sustained multiple gunshots, and had been rushed to a nearby hospital.
