Kearsney claims mixed bag of results

The school's water polo team claimed a well-deserved 12 - 5 win against Michaelhouse at the weekend.

Cricket

Kearsney College’s 1st XI travelled to Michaelhouse for a declaration encounter that would be settled by the bowlers. Kearsney lost the toss and forced to bat on a deck that became progressively more difficult as the day progressed.

Michaelhouse were unable to take advantage of batting first as there were a few injudicious shot selections from their batsmen, coupled with excellent catching from Kearsney’s fielders, that saw them bundled out for a mere 91 runs.

As predicted, the spinners took control of the game and Joshua Stocks, with an impressive 6/21 in 18 overs, did most of the damage. With a deteriorating track, chasing 91 was never going to be easy, and a motivated and competent Michaelhouse made sure Kearsney had to work hard for their runs.

A gritty 29 from Dylan Hulett up-front, and an aggressive and rapid 24* from Rubin Rheeder, got the Kearsney outfit across the line, to record a five-wicket win.

It was a good start to the season for Kearsney across the age groups as the school won nine, lost two and drew one match.

Water polo

Kearsney College’s water polo season kicked off with an away fixture against Michaelhouse. Both teams looked for a good start and Michaelhouse came out hard in the opening exchanges but Kearsney absorbed the pressure and controlled the pace of the game and opened up the scoring.

As the match progressed, Kearsney’s four matrics showed composure and worked the combinations well with the younger players on the team.

Kearsney’s Tyson Andrews and Wesley Marshall led from the front and each scored a few great goals. Brett van Noordwyk controlled his troops from the back and pulled off some fine saves in goals.

Kearsney beat Michaelhouse 12 – 5.

Basketball

Kearsney travelled to the Midlands for the opening encounter of the season. The game was well attended and the clash was highly anticipated by both sets of spectators.

Michaelhouse started well and they scored easily on offence as JC Oelofse tore Kearsney’s defence to shreds.

Kearsney settled down and found fluidity on offence, but during one offence they were unable to put the ball in the basket. Looking out of sorts, they trailed 18 – 34 at half-time.

The third quarter saw much of the same as Kearsney changed its defence in an attempt to cope with JC Oelofse’s onslaught. The talented player continued his excellent form and proved the difference between the two teams.

Kearsney won the fourth quarter 15 – 11, but could not pull back the commanding lead that the home team had accrued.

Michaelhouse beat Kearsney 62 – 44.
