‘More can be done to prevent unwanted babies’

According to Billy, people who fall pregnant and don't plan on keeping the baby for various reasons, including not affording, can use the available baby safes to drop off their infants so that they can find a home.

DA PR Councillor, Mzamo Billy recently visited the family of a woman who buried her foetus in KwaNdengezi, near Pinetown.

According to Billy the woman insisted she did nothing sinister and did not harm the baby. She claimed she had a miscarriage.

“She was scared and confused and, along with her aunt, decided to bury the foetus in the backyard. This happened in December last year. She was arrested last Wednesday after neighbours informed police,”

According to KZN police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala a post-mortem is currently being conducted to establish the cause of death of the foetus.

She’s currently out on bail.

“From our conversation it became clear that poverty and unemployment remains the biggest enemy in our communities. She fell pregnant while unemployed with two other kids already. From my observation, I believe that we need to strengthen efforts to provide education on birth control, safe abortion and alternatives for unwanted infants,” said councillor Billy.
