Kloof couple celebrates blessed anniversary

Mike and Paddy Freese met through a mutual friend who organised a blind date for them 51 years ago and have been together since.

A KLOOF couple’s relationship has had it downs but working through them has rewarded them with many beautiful years together.

Mike and Paddy Freese, who celebrated their golden anniversary on 29 November, said it still feels unreal that they have been together for so many years.

“When you get married, you do not really think about what you going to be doing in 50 years time, but here we are; we have been blessed and we are thankful,” said Mike.

The couple met through a mutual friend who organised a blind date for them. “He fetched me from home. We did not know each other. He held my hand the entire night and we have been together since, I guess it was love at first sight,” said Paddy.

“Whenever he asked him to do something, he would say ‘I will do it tomorrow’, so when he was asked’ when is he going to get married’, I replied and said ‘isn’t about time’. If I had not said it maybe I would still be waiting for that tomorrow,” laughed Paddy.

Paddy said she liked everything about her husband, “he was there for me all the time when the children were small, he has always been a hands-on father and when he returned from work, he would take over and carry some of the burden.”

Mike said his wife has always been a giver, “she gave me her time and showed me unconditional love. We have been together through and through, time truly flies when you are having fun. Our marriage is also based on the love of the Lord and the faith we have,” said Mike.

The couple advised young people to fight for their marriage. “If you work through your downs you definitely get many ups and your relationship get stronger,” said Paddy.

They are blessed with four children and many grandchildren.
