Westville shootout suspects’ getaway vehicle found abandoned, on fire

Police recovered the getaway vehicle in Clermont, where it had been abandoned and set alight.

POLICE shot and killed a robber during a shootout near the Westville Village Market after a gang, heavily armed with AK47’s, allegedly targeted a pension payout.

Blue Security’s Highway area tactical ambassador, Russel Lawson, said police responded swiftly to the scene. It is believed the gang consisted of four or five heavily armed men.

“The suspects had arrived at the mall earlier in a white Toyota Hilux double cab. The gang opened fire on police, who responded to the scene, and returned fire. One suspect was shot dead during the shootout,” he said.

“The suspects fled in the direction of Roger Sishi Road toward Clermont and remain at large,” Lawson said.

Police tracked the vehicle to Clermont where is was found abandoned and on fire.

Westville SAPS has not responded to questions.
