Senior citizens ‘Go!Durban’ on exciting trip

After a fruitful trip, the Pinetown residents said they were looking forward to having the bus project in operation

A TRIP along the Go!Durban route was a hit among Pinetown senior citizens.

The Pinehaven Retirement Village, Pinehaven Lodge and Chelsea Retirement Village residents said they had so much fun as the trip included visiting heritage sites and learning more about the South African culture. Gail Davies said the trip was organised by Operation Sukuma Sakhe and it was very special to everyone as it took them out of their comfort zone.

“We would never have gone there on our own and after this wonderful experience, we will be planning more trips,” she said.

The residents visited Ohlange High School in Inanda, which was founded by John Dube and Nokutela Dube née Mdima. Dube was also the first president of the ANC.

“We also visited his graveside. We learnt that he cast his first vote in the school’s chapel. After he cast his vote, we were told that Mandela visited Dube’s grave, where he said: ‘Mr President, I have come to report to you that South Africa is free today’. That really touched me,” said an excited Davies.

Although the Go!Durban has been delayed, Davies said that she is looking forward to having the bus project in operation. “I truly believe that it will work. The work that has been done on the roads is amazing. We had a chance to go past the townships and see things that we have never seen before,” she said.
