Tactical team saves dogs from heatstroke in Hillcrest

Blue Security tactical ambassador, Russel Lawson advised motorists to never leave animals locked in a vehicle without the windows being left adequately open.

TWO dogs were rescued after they were left alone, locked in a hot vehicle yesterday morning, (Wednesday, 23 October) in Hillcrest.

Blue Security tactical ambassador, Russel Lawson said he and his partner assisted members of the Kloof SPCA after two Staffordshire Bull Terriers had been spotted having difficulty in a vehicle parked outside a petrol station.

“We went to the vehicle and noticed that the dogs had been locked inside with the windows left only slightly open and they were starting to take severe strain. We immediately got to work trying to force open a window further so that we could rescue them before it was too late,” said Lawson.

Fortunately, they managed to force open one of the windows without damaging the vehicle in any way.

“We then pulled both of the dogs out of the vehicle just in time. A member of the Metro Police Search and Rescue team also attended to assist at the scene of the incident,” explained Lawson.

He said the two dogs were transported to the SPCA by the members of Kloof and Highway SPCA, including a local inspector, for an emergency medical assessment as they had clearly taken severe strain.

Lawson added that the owner of the vehicle and the dogs arrived back at the scene and immediately rushed to the SPCA to check on the condition of his dogs.

“We advise all motorists to be aware of the high risk of heatstroke, especially as summer approaches, and to never leave animals locked in a vehicle without the windows being left adequately open, even for a few minutes, while shopping.”
