Kearsney celebrates winning weekend

The local school claimed a double win against DHS at the weekend.

Cricket

KEARSNEY enjoyed a successful day against DHS on a warm Saturday as it recorded a clean sweep of victories and posted centuries in the 1st and 2nd X1 games.

The hosts won the toss and chose to bat first on an outstanding batting track and continued their good form and recorded an emphatic victory on the Smith Oval.

Openers Louis Nel (60) and Jean-Luc Talbot (110) utilised the surface and the conditions to build a solid foundation while they searched of a mammoth score. R Shedlock (3/49 in 10) and M Moosa (1/15 in 10) stemmed the flow of runs, to a certain extent.

Jordan Bamber chipped in at the end of the innings with a brisk 31 and Kearsney posted a formidable 268/6.

DHS started well but lost wickets at regular intervals. B Sambhu (45) and H van der Merwe (38) were the pick of the DHS batters. Cade Carmichael’s 3/41 scoreboard pressure, and a few unnecessary runouts, eventually brought the DHS run chase to a close on 177.

Kearsney 1st X1: 268/6, DHS 1st X1: 177 all out. Kearsney won by 91 runs.

Basketball

DHS travelled to Kearsney for what the many spectators expected to be a tough tussle between two of KZN’s top basketball playing schools.

The first quarter was a tight affair as neither team gave the other space on offence or defence. Kearsney held a slender one-point lead (16 – 15) at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive tussle as Kearsney limited DHS to two points in the quarter. At the half-time break, Kearsney led 25 – 17.

The third quarter saw Kearsney extend their lead to 18 points and outscored their opponents 22 – 12.

The game should have been in the bag by the start of the fourth quarter, but DHS stepped up a gear defensively. They pressed Kearsney and forced them into making careless turnovers which they converted into points.

As both teams exerted themselves for one-and-a-half hours, the final five minutes were an energy sapping, exhausting affair. Kearsney lost the quarter 13 – 18 but managed to win the game. Kearsney beat DHS 60 – 47.
