Diamond anniversary for Kloof couple

Lothar and Gerda Volker recently celebrated their diamond anniversary.

A KISS to start the day and another kiss to end it, is a Kloof couple’s recipe for a long lasting relationship.

Lothar and Gerda Volker (nee Dedekind) celebrated their diamond anniversary on Thursday, 26 September. Gerda and Lothar went to the same high school but never met each other, “but I knew of him through his sister as she was a friend of mine,” said Gerda.

Gerda and her sister came to Durban Technikon for a finishing course in domestic science in 1956. They joined the youth group (Jugend Bund) and that is where she met Lothar. “When she walked into that room, our eyes just clicked, I do not know how to explain it, it was just funny and strange at the same time.

I can say it was love at first sight,” said Lothar. The next day, they went to the beach and have been together since. The couple got engaged in 1958 and married a year later in 1959.The devoted Christians said they have had ups and downs but based on faith, love and hope, they managed to overcome all the challenges.

“My mother taught me to see the best in everyone and always be positive. Sixty years is a very long time and we have been truly blessed and we are still very fit, I still do everything around the house.

“It was just fate and God is definitely looking after us, besides the challenges that we have had, we can say that we have had a good life together and would not change anything,” said Gerda.

Gerda is also well-known figure in the Kloof community as she was the head Librarian at the Kloof Library for many years and also worked in the Pinetown Library. Lothar is a carpenter by profession and has built all the houses that they have stayed in. He is still very hands-on, makes their furniture and toys for his grandchildren.

They are blessed with four children, seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
