Help Durban sparkle ahead of annual race

There will be a mass litter clean up along the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN route this Saturday.

DURBANITES are invited to help clean up the city on Saturday, 12 October at the event Race Village (near Bike and Bean) from 7am in the prelude to the third annual FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN.

PETCO, South Africa’s national industry body accountable for managing the PET/polyethylene terephthalate plastic industry’s Extended Producer Responsibility, will provide the bags and gloves used during the clean-up.

“We are proud to play our part in keeping Durban clean,” said the managing director of Stillwater Sports, Michael Meyer.

“In 2019, we introduced a Single-Use Plastic (SUP) management campaign that aims to drastically reduce the usage of single-use plastics by 85 per cent. Our ultimate goal is to host a mass participation road running series that is plastic free.”

Janine Osborne, the PETCO stakeholder and relations manager, said, “PET plastic bottle recycling in South Africa, which PETCO is responsible for, is doing very well. A 63 per cent recycling rate was reached in 2018.

“To date, a total of R6.7 billion has been injected into the South African economy through the manufacturing of end-use products made from recycled PET plastic, such as t-shirts, stuffing for duvets and new bottles. We can be proud that South Africa has one of the highest audited PET bottle recycling rates in the world.”
