No help for Wyebank flood victims

Some of the RDP houses are on the verge of collapsing and residents are worried as the rainy season is fast approaching.

WYEBANK residents are living in fear as their RDP houses were destroyed during the heavy rains in April.

With the rainy season fast approaching, residents said they are worried and do not feel safe. Some of the houses are on the verge of collapsing as their foundations are heavily damaged.

One of the residents who spoke to the Highway Mail said municipal officials have inspected their homes, but nothing has been done.

“We know that they are working on this matter, but we are feeling very uneasy. The walls have cracks and I have two small children who cannot even play outside freely,” said a resident.

DA PR councillor, Riona Gokool, said a request was made to the eThekwini Municipality to assist and inspect the RDP houses damaged in Wyebank after the storm hit in April.

“Despite numerous follow-up calls to the municipality, the Housing Department only recently made contact,” said Gokool

Gokool said the department requested a list that was compiled with the help of a community member working closely with the affected residents.

“An inspection was conducted on Friday, 20 September, on some of the homes by the Housing Department and they promised to return to complete the inspection.”

Gokool has urged all residents to come forward if they live on council-owned property and were affected by the storm and, to date, have not received any assistance.

“The municipality cannot assist if it is not aware of the issues,” she said.

“The damage to homes range from foundations collapsing, walls cracking, pipes bursting, among other issues. It begs the question if due process was followed when building these homes,” said Gokool.
