#Riseup was the hashtag for the day. At a special assembly, headmaster Graham Steele addressed the school before a minute’s silence was held for pupils to fully grasp the meaning of the day.

“Gentleman, I don’t think we realise what it is to part of such a big movement. A movement which involves not just adults, but which involves adults and us and schools. We have seen on social media what has happened over the past week at various schools, and how the schools have stood together against violence against women,” said Steele.

Steele went on to say that it was important that people send this united message of support.

An amount of about R8 000 was raised on the day, through the sale of black ribbons, which will go to a charity which aids gender-based violence.
