#WomensMonth: Learners make their voices heard

The head girls from three schools in the Highway area voice their thoughts on the importance of #WomensMonth.

TO commemorate Women’s Month, the Highway Mail posed two poignant questions to South Africa’s future female leaders to find out their views and opinions on celebrating all things women.

Learners were asked: “Do you feel that there is anything to celebrate this Women’s month due to the inherent risks (abuse) women face simply due to their gender? What do you feel is the way forward for girls to improve the world they live in?”

Olivia Thring (Curro Hillcrest’s head girl):

“There are definitely things to celebrate this Women’s Month such as the good that women are doing and the awareness that is being raised toward issues that women face today. We can celebrate the brave, resolute women that are standing together in solidarity to fight for what is right. The way forward for young women is to encourage each other to speak up and strive for what is right and Godly. We need to empower one another to use our voices to bring change.”

Courtney Sim (Thomas More College’s head girl):

“As a firm believer in the power of unity, I encourage everyone – not only girls – to begin improving our world by noticing any form of daily discrimination. Concurrently, I challenge every reader to acknowledge within themselves when they have defaced another gender, and to right their misconduct sincerely and honestly.”

Abigail Kane (Waterfall College’s head girl):

“We celebrate because we are reminded that women are fighters and that we can rise against abuse. We need to raise a generation of strong young women and men who will lift their voices – people who will fight against the injustice of abuse. Together, we are stronger.”
