Durban’s annual film festival a hit

While the event went off without a hitch, local councillors agree that the film industry in Durban needs to grow.

THE Durban International Convention Centre (ICC), along with Elangeni Hotel, recently hosted a show-stopping 40th annual Durban International Film Festival.

This festival showcases locally produced films to a local and international audience.

This year the festival kicked off on 18 July, Mandela Day and ran until 28 July.

Councillor Siboniso Sibisi, who attended the opening event, said, “The quality of locally produced films is on the rise and it is very clear that we have plenty of talent in our country and we have not disappointed our international guests. We do, however, need to ensure that we create more opportunities for young people who wish to go into the profession of acting, directing or producing films and that they have the chance to pursue their dreams.”

Sibisi also indicated that the film that was showcased during the launch evening, Knuckle City, was a great success and really spoke to the hearts of many South Africans.

The DA whip for the economic development and planning committee, Cllr Marlaine Nair, said eThekwini has huge potential for job creation through the film industry.

“Presently, Durban lacks the infrastructure to adequately support the industry and the aim is to increase our market share of the film industry, taking away from Cape Town and Gauteng, both presently dominate film in South Africa.”
