Pinetown couple fits like a glove

PINETOWN couple, Tom and Connie Roberts, spent their golden anniversary relaxing at home on Friday, 12 July after returning from a holiday.

The couple met in Rhodesia where Connie grew up. “I was there because of work,” said Tom.

Tom first saw Connie when she came to book a tour to South Africa, “at that time, nothing crossed my mind as she was just another customer,” he said.

It was only when Tom’s friend organised a blind date for him that he met Connie formally and said seeing her on that day, he just fell in love.

They dated for nine months before getting engaged and got married a few months later in Fort Victoria, Rhodesia in 1969.

“I had no doubts or questions about my love for her, I knew she was just the one. There was no reason to wait for years before making it official,” said Tom.

Connie said when she first met Tom, she thought he had lots of money. “The funny thing is that he also thought I had lots of money. Our unity was a package that just worked from the very beginning. Things happen in marriage but we learnt along the journey to take the good with the bad,” said Connie.

The parents of two sons and grandparents to two grandchildren have lived in the Pinetown area for 42 years.

Tom said many people may remember him as the MD of Pinetown Jurgens Caravans in the early eighties.

The lovebirds were also actively involved in Gelofte Skool as Tom coached rugby and cricket while Connie assisted in the school tuckshop.
