2 Arrested: High speed chase comes to crashing end in central Pinetown

Community teamwork has been celebrated as the main reason these two suspects were arrested following two high-speed chases.

DANE Lee of Izimbila Security, in a joint response with members of SA Community Crime Watch (SACCW), managed to track a vehicle which was acting suspiciously in the Assagay area.

“Upon investigation, it was learned that the vehicle was wanted in the area for the theft of numerous motor vehicles,” said Lee.

“A chase ensued and the vehicle was lost in the Hillcrest area.”

However, that was not to be the end of the story because communications between members of SACCW and the SAPS later led to the identification of the vehicle on surveillance cameras entering the Kloof gorge.

“This information was passed on to SAPS tactical members and they picked up the vehicle heading into Pinetown,” said Steven King of SACCW.

“A second chase ensued and the vehicle, a white Ford Eco Sport, lost control and crashed into three other vehicles,” said Lee adding that Cst. Jeandrê Welgemoed and Cst. Zai Rangila of the tactical unit then apprehended two out of the three suspects.

They were found to be linked to numerous cases in the area.

Welgemoed said the suspects, who were arrested, were also in possession of various implements used in car thefts, as well as a radio communications device.

“They also monitored us on an illegal police scanner,” he said.

“Fortunately no civilians were seriously injured in the collision,” said King.

“It again shows the difference a community can make when we work with, and not against law enforcement. SACCW is a well-organised group and has made a big impact on combating crime and assisting SAPS with numerous arrests. Well done to all the members of saps, security companies and SACCW who went out to catch these criminals who have  plagued our community over the last couple of months.”
