Top spot for athlete

Josh's determination to succeed has pushed him to claim a win in his age group at a recent duathlon event in Cape Town.

ONE of Highway’s up-and-coming young athletes, Josh Steytler, placed first in the SA Champs Duathlon’s U17 male event at the Killarney Race Track in Cape Town recently.

The event comprised of a 5km run and a 20km cycle, followed by a 2.5km run.

“I felt nervous because the conditions weren’t the best with the hectic gusts of wind and a temperature of only 11 degrees,” said the Grade 11 Kearsney College learner. “I was aiming for the win and was getting my mind ready to prepare for the pain that was going to set in through the gruelling conditions.”

He tackled the 5km run by moving at a controlled pace to conserve his energy for what he said is his weaker discipline, the bike leg. “I came into transition in second place and made it into the top three on the bike. We worked well and pulled away, leaving the pack behind us,” said Josh.

He exited the bike race in first place in his age group with a fast transition into the run. “I held a good pace throughout the last run and came in first to clinch the win,” said the proud teen. “I was happy with the form and the preparation that I put into the race which lead to an amazing result. I had a plan coming into it and executed it with perfection, coming home with a gold medal for KZN.”
