Adrenaline-pumping action revs into Shongweni

Foot-ups racers from across the country will descend upon Shongweni for the third and fourth national event this weekend.

KLOOF’S trials and foot-ups ace, Devon Mackenzie, hopes to close the gap on multiple South African champions, Brent and Bruce Le Riche, at this year’s third and fourth National Trials rounds on Saturday, 13 and Sunday, 14 July at Killarney 4×4 in Shongweni.

Devon has held third position in South Africa for the last two years and is rapidly closing in on the top two as he has put in copious amounts of practice time, including exhibition events. Highway residents are encouraged to go along and support Devon and the other riders competing in the spectator-friendly event.

But trials are not all about the top pro class, there are three other classes of different skill levels – Experts, Intermediate and Clubman where there are many thrills and spills, tears and smiles and at the end of the day great friendships are formed or reinforced.

The objective in the trials is to complete the 12 marked sections per lap for four laps, without putting your feet down.

“There is an exciting new rule introduced this year, a time limit per section. This puts more pressure on the rider because if they exceed the time limit, they will drop five points and this can make a huge difference to the final scores,” said the chairman of the KZN Trials Club, Colin Hayward.

All sections are within easy walking distance. A few sections include boulders and cross rivers and aim to test the skill and courage of the riders.

“You will be amazed where these riders can take a motor bike. It sometimes defies gravity and you have to see it to believe it,” said Colin.

Riding starts at 10am on both days and races will conclude by 4pm. Refreshments will be available to purchase on site. Contact Colin on 084 404 7152 or Bruce on 082 656 2323.
