Wheels of change turn for young girls
More than 600 bicycles will be distributed among young female learners in need.
A BICYCLE donation will set the wheels in motion for more than 600 girls across KZN as it will offer a smoother trip to and from school each day.
The Rotary Club of Hillcrest, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Empangeni and Bicycles for Humanity in Seattle, USA, secured a supply of 625 girls bikes from the Huffy Corporation.
“This is the second container within the last two years the Rotary club has received. Through our various projects, we know the communities need upliftment in many areas and one of the big ones is education. One of the big worries is children having to walk between 5km to 10km to school each day and they end up arriving tired to class. With the bicycles, we hope to make a big difference in their lives,” said the Club’s 2018/19 president, William Gibson.

The Upper Highway Rotarians, through its various outreach programmes, alongside KZN Cycling, will distribute the much-needed bicycles to assist girls between six and 12 years old.
Alec Lenferna of KZN Cycling said, “We have quite a substantial development programme that runs throughout the province and when they (the Rotary Club of Hillcrest) approached us to assist with distribution, we are able to get the bikes to children who really need it. We are identifying schools that have a need and where we know the kids are going to be able utilise the bikes to the best of their ability.”
The Rotary Club of Hillcrest added thanks to Campbells Cargo for storing and distributing the bikes.
