Throw your support behind Embo Gym fund-raiser

Catch South Africa's current Strongman, Blake Louwrens at the Embo Gym fund-raiser at Watercrest Mall this weekend.

STRENGTH Events, in association with The Order of St John and Lives With A Purpose, will host a fund-raiser at Watercrest Mall on Saturday, 6 July from 10am to 2pm for Embo Gym.

The man behind the metal:

Alex Luthuli, a respected and larger-than-life, well-known member of the Embo and Hillcrest communities, is constantly pursuing his passion to uplift, strengthen and encourage all in his path.

Alex is married with three children and works as an assistant manager at Junction BP in Hillcrest. He has been involved in sport for as long as he can remember and is constantly motivated to train himself to keep fit and strong.

With a heart as large as his physique, and a passion for the youth, he has spent the past several years building the local EMBO Gym to provide a healthy and focused environment for youngsters.

Alex decided that within Embo there was little to do and the younger generation was being exposed on a daily basis to crime and drugs.

Haylee Vermeulen (The Unlimited), Alex Luthuli (Embo Gym) and Rory Scheepers (Strength Club).

He started a training group every afternoon using the local school classrooms and taught basic bodyweight movements and aerobics. Due to the huge interest he created, he encountered space problems in a few months.

Alex Luthuli funded the building, maintenance, equipment and staff from his personal savings as he believes this is an avenue, which he knows and understands, to help the fight against crime and drug abuse.

The event:
This is a fun, interactive day for the whole family as powerlifters join forces to honour Alex Luthuli’s dedication to his community. Visitors can expect to see Ford Ranger Deadlift, Super Yoke Race, Farmers Carry, Log lift, Tug of War as well as a demonstration by the Shongweni K9 Unit.

“It’s going to be a great day with some impressive strength displays, competitions and raffles to be won. There will also be an appearance of the current SA Strongman, Blake Louwrens,” said Watercrest Mall’s Elizabeth Roux.
