Rabid dog caught at Kloof SPCA

A dog walker at the Kloof and Highway SPCA was bitten by the rabid dog before it was caught.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA have confirmed a case of rabies in Kloof after a rabid dog was found on its premises and bit one of its volunteers.

On Thursday, 6 June, the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Brigitte Rossouw reported that a medium sized black and tan dog ran down the driveway of the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

“The staff were immediately alerted by a dog walker who tried to catch it, and everyone tried to catch the dog. It was behaving strangely. Once the dog was caught by the staff, it was assessed and, due to its strange behaviour and because one of our volunteer dog walkers was bitten, the decision was made to send the dog for rabies testing,” said Rossouw.

The dog was reported to have made its way to the local NPO from Ashley. Numerous attempts were made by other residents to catch the dog.

“The dog also had recent open bite wounds. Sadly the dog was confirmed to have been rabies positive and we appeal to members of the public to ensure their pets are vaccinated against rabies. We remind members of the public to always be cautious and careful when approaching stray dogs, especially if they display unusual or aggressive behaviour,” said Rossouw.

“Rabies kills and there is no cure for animals or humans, so please protect yourselves and your pets,” she concluded.

For any animal related emergencies, contact the Kloof and Highway SPCA on 031 764 1212 or on its emergency number, 073 335 9322.
