Max-Reece aims for global competition

The local teen hopes to make his mark at the British Junior International for target shooting but needs your help to get there.

PINETOWN’S Max-Reece van der Merwe clearly has an eye for the sport of shooting as he was recently selected to represent South Africa at the British Junior International in August this year.

At 11 years old, and still in Grade 6 at Atholl Heights Primary School, he signed up as a target shooter for Glenwood High School.

Through hard work and determination, he was selected as the first and only pistol shottist for the KZN Bisley team back in 2017.

In his second year, at age 12, Max-Reece decided against assisted shooting and moved straight to shooting free hand for U21s.

Again, his continuous dedication saw him earn a 1st place gold medal at inter-schools and was selected as a member of the U21 pistol team. With this group, he represented KZN at nationals in Newcastle and tied for eighth place.

“Shooting calms me down and keeps me focussed. I am passionate about shooting and my winning recipe is: ‘the more you practice the better you will become.'”

This year, as a Grade 8 learner at Glenwood High School, he snapped up second place at the South African National School Shooters Union (SANSSU) trials and was selected as one of the 21-member SA team. They will travel to England in August to participate in BJI (British Junior International) 2019.

“Such a selection and representation does not come cheap and a fund-raising drive is in motion at present. Kindly support our golf day by either sponsoring a hole, prizes, or even better, participate in a four-ball. Alternatively any contribution is appreciated, no matter how small,” said his mom, Sydney.
