Villagers continue to bring home wins

The club also thanked its pre-season sponsor, Get Fit, for its continued support.

ON Saturday afternoon the Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club claimed another two wins in their encounter with its KZNRU First Division rivals, UKZN, at Howard College.

In the 2nd XV match, the home side displayed their depth with a well-deserved 46-31 win. Man of the Match went to Jaco Beetge (forwards) and Dan Mulder (backline).

The 1st XV match provided a spectacle of brutal confrontation. UKZN boasted a large and physical presence, but found themselves shutdown by the relentless tackle rate of the highly spirited Villagers.

Neither side planned to submit so the visitors dug deep and showed their determination to win.

With three minutes left, the Villagers held onto a 12 – 3 lead when UKZN snatched an unconverted try. Ultimately, Hillcrest won a hard fought 12 – 8 win.

Man of the Match went to Sphe Kambule (forwards) and Henkie Groenewald (backline).

The Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club kicked off the weekend with a visit from its pre-season sponsor, Neil du Plessis, the owner of Get Fit Hillcrest. “For the third year in a row, their generous sponsorship has been the secret to the success for the Hillcrest Villagers’ team. Carefully planned sessions have allowed the players to work at a very high intensity, in ways that best simulate the strains endured whilst on the field.

“We would like to thank Neil and his staff for the massive contribution they make to community rugby and, in particular, the Hillcrest Villagers,” said the club’s Rene Missen.
