Book your seats for feast of one-act plays

The Westville Theatre Club will stage a host of wonderfully crafted one-act plays from the beginning of April.

IT is not often that a festival of this creative magnitude comes to Durban as the Westville Theatre Club prepares to host nine, one-act plays from Tuesday, 2 April until Saturday, 13 of April.

The plays are organised into three groups.

Group 1 opens with a South African Writers’ Circle award winning drama, Miracle Makers. It is an alternate story of Nelson Mandela, a play with a twist you won’t see coming. Following this is a South African play, Iwisa – the Fist, themed on knowledge empowerment, youth politics, brotherly love against xenophobia and identity.

To end the evening is a light-hearted comedy, The Better Half, set in a typical rugby supporter’s household and his wife, who is up for an award for the best housewife of the year. Show dates are on 2, 5, 9 and 12 April.

Group 2 is filled with family-friendly farces that will deliver a hefty dose of laughter. The Tell-Tale Teacher, set in a classroom where children are left to solve a mystery of their missing teacher, is a humorous play.

Thereafter, you will travel back to 19th century Russia, where a long-time friend and neighbour has come to make a proposal to his neighbours’ daughter. A Cut Above the Rest will take the audience to a funeral of the wealthy Ms Davenport, where there are more suspects than guests all want a piece of her legendary diamond necklace. Show dates are on 3, 6 (Matinee), 10, and 13 April (matinee).

Group 3 is not for the faint-hearted and is for mature audiences only. No children U13 may attend. Be prepared for violence, thrill and adult comedy.

Caught in the Act; a comedy where two characters wake up in bed together but have no idea how they got there or who they are. Faith will throw viewers into a deeply emotional crime drama of abuse and murder, where the heroin fights for her life.

Finally, we are transported into a seemingly regular household that turns ordinary luncheon into a chilling bloodbath in You Do Love Me Don’t You. Show dates include 4, 6, 11, and 13 April.

Bookings are open and tickets cost R100 per person per night. There will be a discount if booking is made for more than one show. Children pay R50 for Group 2. The shows start at 7pm and matinees start at 3pm.
