Durbanites dedicate hours to SPCA dog box challenge

The duo is doing this challenge to fundraise for the Kloof SPCA and for all men, women and animals in the Emergency Services who have passed on for the sake of their community.

HIGHWAY besties, Shane Cox and Pierre Venter-Maher, will again be taking part in the annual Dog Box Challenge, however, this year they will do 100 hours in a dog cage at different venues.

The Dog Box challenge is spending 24 hours in a dog kennel at the Kloof and Highway SPCA. In 2018, the duo did a total of 48 hours, 24 hours at Watercrest Mall and 24 hours at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

“We believe in always raising the bar a little. This year we pledge 100 hours which is well over four days in a tiny cage for the Kloof and Highway SPCA,” said Shane.

Their challenge will start this weekend from Friday noon, 15 March to Saturday, 16 March where they will be at the Watercrest Mall food court for 24 hours and urge the community to come and support them.

The next confirmed venue will the NPN Auto Centre- Shell Garage St Johns Pinetown where they will spend 28 hours caged in a dog box on Friday 29 and Saturday, 30 March.

Manager of the Kloof andHighway SPCA, Barbara Patrick, Shane Cox, Pierre Venter-Maher with Lucy and Kloof and Highway SPCA’s marketing and fund-raising officer, Brigitte Rossouw appeal for businesses and people to support the annual dog box challenge.

“Any amount of donation no matter how small will be warmly welcomed and will make a huge difference in the running of the Kloof SPCA.

“It costs more than a million Rand a month to keep them operational and in doing so, do extraordinary things for our furry friends,” said Pierre.

The third venue will be the Westville Mall from Friday 24 to Saturday, 25 May, but the final challenge will be held at the Kloof and Highway SPCA for 24 hours on 31 May to reach their 100 hours target where other dog lovers will be taking part to raise funds for their fur friends.

“We do this event in memory of my late sister, Cherise Cox, who was a Durban Metro Police Dog Unit member, and for all men, women and animals in the Emergency Services who have passed on for the sake of our community and beautiful country. Both of us are former South African Police Service members who worked in and with the SAPS Dog Unit in fighting crime,” explained Shane.

Their initial target is always R10 000 and they will again try for R10 000 each. All corporate sponsorships of R2 000 or more may place branded banners inside or onto the dog box kennel for publicity.
