Blind cricketers to take on Northdene Prep’s 1st team

Donovan Van Noordwyk, KZN Blind Cricket co-ordinator, said he hoped to see more schools get involved with raising awareness like Northdene Prep.

IF  YOU want to watch something very special, head on down to the cricket fields at Northdene Preparatory on Sunday,10 March.

The school’s first cricket team will be playing against players from the KZN society for the blind in a cricket match to raise awareness for blind cricket.

According to Northdene Prep’s head of cricket, Dylan Botha the game is played much like any ordinary cricket game but with a special ball.

“The boundaries are all the same therefore its incredible to see a person that can’t see, hit a boundary,” said Botha.

“This event will be hosted at Northdene Preparatory at 9am. Come support the game and be a part of this amazing and once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Botha who has been putting his players through their paces this week to prepare them for the match.

Donovan Van Noordwyk, KZN Blind Cricket co-ordinator who was instrumental in organising this event said it was the first time a main-stream primary school would be hosting an awareness day for blind cricket.

Van Noordwyk said he hoped to see more schools get involved with raising awareness like Northdene Prep is. “We are hoping that blind cricket will grow and gain more exposure in KZN as a result of this match,” he said. “I hope after this game more people and schools will get more involved. We are an NPO and rely on sponsorship in order for us to develop the game and go on tours.”

Van Noordwyk also explained how the ball is adapted for the differently-abled players.  “The ball has small ball bearings in it which help the blind cricketers to hear where it is.”

There will food and drinks on sale, so take the whole family and make a day of it.
