Mariannridge family left to pick up the pieces after random fire

"When they arrived they found a wendy house was on fire and after their evaluation there was no evidence of a petrol bomb," said Western Region commander, Alfred Newman.

A MARIANNRIDGE family was left without water and electricity after a part of their home was set alight by what they believe was a petrol bomb.

According to the family the incident happened at 10pm on Tuesday, 26 February as they were about to go to bed. They heard a loud bang and didn’t think much of it.

“It was only when our neighbour shouted fire that we realised that there was a fire inside our yard,” said the homeowner whose identity is known to the Highway Mail. The family suspects that it was a petrol bomb as the fire was followed by an item being thrown into their yard.

“Everything that was in our back yard and wendy house was destroyed,” she said.

According to the fire department, someone had walked to the Pinetown South Fire Department in Mariannridge to alert the department about the fire.

The eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services charges individuals R295.22 for an incident report.

According to the eThekwini Municipality this is usually requested for purposes of insurance assessments and or claims after a fire incident.

“The item and the amount is provided for in the council’s approved Tariffs of Charges for services rendered by the Fire and Emergency Services Unit on behalf of the Municipality,” said eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela.

Ward 8 and 103 DA PR councillor, Gill Noyce said she believes that it is ridiculous that citizens have to pay that amount.
