Body found near Queensburgh informal settlement

A man who was collecting medicinal herbs in the bush near the informal settlement smelled the body before he saw it and initially thought it was a dead animal.

A RESIDENT of the informal settlement near Huntley Road made the grisly discovery of the corpse of an elderly man on the morning of Saturday, 9 February. Simthiwe Mchunu, who has lived in the settlement for about two years, said he had been out gathering herbs when he came across the body.

“I was collecting Zulu medicine plants and then I smelled it,” he said. Mchunu related how, after picking up the putrid smell he said he can’t even begin to describe, he followed it to see where it was coming from.

“I went towards it and then I saw the body.”

Mchunu said he called the police who arrived shortly thereafter.

The corpse is thought to be an elderly man and was reportedly wearing khaki pants and a shirt.

The body, which remains unidentified, was transported from the overgrowth by SAPS Search and Rescue and taken to the mortuary by SAPS.

Malvern SAPS confirmed police are investigating the death of this man. “An inquest docket has been registered in this matter,” said communication officer for Malvern SAPS, W/O Radhika Marimuthu.
