Fabulous reads – Empowering read tackles ‘taboo’ topic

Book review - Whole Pieces by Debbie Ivins.

Whole Pieces, Debbie Ivins, self-published

I HAD the absolute pleasure to meet Debbie Ivins last year for a face-to-face, heart-to-heart interview. While she may be petite in build, and comes off as a bit shy, her personality alone can fill a room. She exudes strength, courage, determination and has a drive to live life to the fullest.

But to reach this chapter in her life, she first had to traverse a dark and uncertain path. Her self-published book explores her journey and, by sharing her experience, hopes to help empower other women who are or may have gone through something similar.

All the Westville athlete has wanted is a baby of her own, and, unable to fall pregnant naturally, both her and her husband opted to in vitro fertilisation. She fell pregnant twice and suffered two miscarriages.

In her book she explores the topic and includes poetry she wrote as well as the personal e-mails she sent to her family and close group of friends explaining their situation. While she talks about loss, she focuses on hope. The talented local has continued to work on seeing the positives that life has to offer.
