UPDATE: Baby girl stable after three hour rescue mission

The baby girl had been washed five metres down the storm water drain.

THE newborn baby who was trapped in a storm water drain has been rescued and is a stable condition.

Following a nail-biting three-hour rescue mission, Garreth Jamieson of Rescue care confirmed that the little girl was alive and stable.

Jamieson said the baby was only a few hours old, as her umbilical cord had still been attached when she was pulled from the drain pipe.

He said she was transported to Albert Luthuli Hospital via the AMS Medical Helicopter.

Robert Mckenzie, KZN EMS spokesman, said the baby girl had been washed around five metres down the pipe (which is around six centimetres in diameter).

Emergency services had to dig down to the pipe where the baby was trapped, before cutting the pipe and carefully extracting the baby.

It is believed authorities were alerted to the situation after a passerby heard the baby’s cries.
