Good Samaritans rescue dog on busy N2

The dog is recovering and has been named Alina, a Russian name which means beautiful.

UPPER Highway resident, Jason Hanwith-Horden could not drive on after seeing a dog in the middle of N2 freeway on Monday.

Jason was driving home from work when he saw the terrified dog walking on the N2 just before the Umngeni off-ramp.

“I love dogs and have dogs at home so I couldn’t drive past after seeing the desperation and fear in her eyes,” said Jason.

Luckily for Jason, another kind motorist, Helga Real stopped and they managed to put a leash on the dog.

“I drove up with her to a vet in Camperdown who was the only one prepared to assist. I paid upfront and the dog was examined and necessary tests and treatment were done. The vet was unsure if she would make it through the night, but she did,” said Jason.

Jade Ashford from Paw Prints Rescue and Rehoming kindly offered to take her in to help with her recovery until she is ready to be introduced to a foster.

“This beautiful girl has been given a name. The rescue centre helping nurse her has called her Alina. Russian name meaning beautiful,” said Jason.

Pet Rescue Pinetown commended Jason for his selflessness.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
