Companies step up for avid Pinetown athletes

Hattons SPAR and Double A Engineering donated running shirt to the Hattons Running Group recently.

THE Hattons Running Group has grown since its inception in 2010. To show their support for the runners involved, Hattons SPAR and Double A Engineering sponsored running shirts for the avid athletes.

As an alternative for runners who could not train in the afternoon due to work or family commitments, the group was formed. Runners would park at the garage in Underwood Road but soon outgrew the space and found a new home at the grounds of Hattons SPAR.

It originally started with 8km runs on a Tuesday and Thursday with a longer run up Cowies Hill on a Wednesday. In the last few years, the group has grown and now runs just about every day over varying distances.

The group’s main members are Pinetown and District Athletic Club (PDAC) members and are known as the Hattons Training Junkies.

“It is a mixed bag of runners with different abilities and goals. There are cross country runners, short distance (10 to 21km) road runners to Comrades runners.

Runners from the group can frequently be seen on the podium at the local races, but there are also members of the group who are just in it for the personal satisfaction of improving their fitness levels,” said the group’s Michelle Sims. Brenda McCann.

The group meets at 4.45am or 5am, depending on distance to be run.

“In rain or shine, summer and winter,” laughed Michelle.

To become a member of the group, contact Deon Tegg or Michelle Sims via PDAC athletic club at pdacsecretary@gmail.com.
