Pinetown heritage site turns into an eyesore

Despite calls and emails sent to the municipality, parishioners said this matter is not taken seriously.

THE rubble outside the Anglican Parish of St John the Baptist in Pinetown, which is also a heritage site, has become an eyesore for parishioners who feel that they are being disrespected by the municipality.

One of the parishioners, Sylvia Wilson said it all started a year ago when there were contractors who were laying pipes in the road.

“The concrete slabs and the road rubble were left in front of the church which was used as parking especially for the older people. There are two churches here and this space was very useful, it use to accommodate 13 cars,” said Wilson.

Despite calls and emails sent to the municipality, Wilson said no one has taken this matter seriously.

Sylvia Wilson is urging the municipality to intervene and remove the rubble outside St John’s Church in Pinetown.

“The rubble use to be double in size than what it is now. Once a truck came to pick it up but broke down and since that day, no one was sent back to finish the job,” she said.

What is more worrying for the parishioners is that there are now people coming from different areas to use it as a dumping area.

“We have recycling containers inside the church, people can not even park here to recycle their bottles because of the mess,” she said.

“We have the St John’s Church Cemetery, there are soldiers and others from out of the country buried here. If their loved ones come to visit their graves, they are welcomed by trash, this is total disgrace,” said the frustrated Wilson.

Ward 18 councillor, Melanie Brauteseth said she was aware of the matter and is currently working with relevant departments to address the issue.
