Westville SAPS admin clerk rescues abandoned newborn at Palmiet Nature Reserve

The baby, who was barely an hour old, was found in a healthy condition.

WESTVILLE SAPS are encouraging residents to donate nappies for a newborn baby who was found in the bushes at the Palmiet Nature Reserve yesterday morning, 19 December.

Westville SAPS communications officer, Capt Elizabeth Squires said one of their members, admin clerk, Nicole Johnson heard what was being reported.

“Nicole’s motherly instinct immediately got the better of her, she jumped into her private car and followed the municipal worker to where the baby was laying in the grass. Nicole ran to the baby, managed to get a jacket and wrapped the baby up and took her to a nearby clinic,” said Squires.

Squires said Nicole has been commended and highly praised by the Station Commander, Colonel Zwelakhe Zondi because had she not rushed out there in the scorching heat, it was unlikely the newborn would have survived much longer as she was naked and exposed.

She then took the baby to King George V hospital where the staff helped with paperwork and reassured her the baby would be kept for a few days and then moved to a foster care home.

Squires added that the baby is doing well and has been named Nicole.

If anyone has information as to who the biological mother may be or wish to donate nappies, contact Westville SAPS on 031 267 7340 or Crime Stop on 0860 10111.

A docket of concealment of birth was opened for investigation.
