Fabulous reads – You’re gonna ‘insta’ntly like this

These Things Really Do Happen To Me by Khaya Dlanga.

These Things Really Do Happen To Me, Khaya Dlanga, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781770106314

I HAVE followed Khaya Dlanga on Twitter for a few years now.

The highly regarded marketing professional, who has worked for several advertising agencies and global-chip companies, is not only delightful online but has been known as a collector of stories for many years. He not only collects stories the way some people use to collect stamps, he tells them brilliantly.

He always manages to curate his timeline perfectly to make the most of the stories he tells.

He balances entertainment with truth and, as such, offers a great example to many who tend to do social media in a way that is far less beneficial to the greater world than he.

As KayaFM radio personality, Jo Lurie, put it recently on her show, TheGramSham, “If there were more Khaya Dlanga’s on social media, there’d be no need for #TheGramSham.”

These Things Really Do Happen To Me, far from being a modern version of showing off, sees Khaya describing everyday experiences that shaped his life.

As the saying goes, sometimes the truth is often far stranger than fiction.

In the book, Dlanga recounts amusing anecdotes from his childhood in rural Transkei, to the way he lives his life now, driving a Jaguar. He even offers the story about the time he fell asleep next to President Thabo Mbeki, how a deaf girl hit on him once.

He is both privileged and an everyman. Anyone who follows him on Instagram will already be familiar with some of the stories he shares.

He describes how he wrote the book after being pressurised by many who enjoyed his posts on social media platforms and asked him to share more details.

The stories show that the amazing is possible, his own story shows that he, like anyone else, had trouble with some of the same circumstances that many others have, but managed to come out with his sense of humour and optimism intact.

Worthwhile, light reading and a great gift idea for anyone who enjoys bite-sized chunks of entertaining reading.
