Pinetown learner, 9, pens first book

The Grade 4 Benjamin Pine Primary School learner wants to encourage other children to love reading and writing.

A lesson about dinosaurs at school fired the imagination of Khwezi Mthethwa (9) who has penned what she learnt in a book. The Key to the Secret Door of Dinosaurs is a book about a girl named Isabella who finds a key in the garden and decides to keep it not knowing that it’s the key that will lead her to finally see the dinosaurs.

The Grade 4 learner at Benjamin Pine Primary School got her passion to write from her dad, Brook Mthethwa who is also an author, but it was her mom, Thabisile, who motivated her to finish writing her book.

“I started writing this book last year in November and wrote three chapters over two weeks. I only finished the last two chapters in July this year after a lot of encouragement from my mom who always said when you start something you need to finish it,” she said.

The wise and very informative Khwezi who loves nature and the wildlife enjoys watching the National Geographic channel with her dad. She said her motto in life is that, ‘when you believe in something do not let anything stop you.’

“I hope to write more books to inspire children to love and enjoy reading and writing.”

Her mom said parents need to believe and encourage their children to allow their imagination to take over.

Benjamin Pine principal, Sandy Brown, said they are thrilled that Khwezi is following her dream.

“We are very proud of her. Thanks has to go to her mom and family for supporting her. We look forward to reading her next book,” she said.

The Key to the Secret Door of Dinosaurs will be launched officially on Saturday, 8 December from 2 to 4pm at the Pinetown Civic Centre meeting room.

The 20-page book is available for R80 at Adams Books in Musgrave and Dr Pixley Kaseme Street (West Street). Or, people can contact Thabisile on 083 356 5949 or email thabisile.mth@gmail.com.
