Fabulous reads – Immerse yourself in fantastical dystopian world

Book review - Elemental Thief by Rachel Morgan.

Elemental Thief (Ridley Kayne Chronicles #1), Rachel Morgan, ISBN: 9780639943619

A DYSTOPIAN young adult novel with a magical twist? Count me in!

Rachel Morgan became a firm fantasy favourite when I picked up the first book in her Creepy Hollow series. I absolutely devoured those books like the Cookie Monster in an Oreo factory.

I commend her for taking a complete leap of faith and leaving behind her beautifully crafted fantasy world to create something fresh and new.

Ridley Kane is a daring thief but its her magic that poses the greatest threat to her existence. The world she lives in has come to fear and hate her kind as it was the greed of the magicists that brought the world to crumbling to its knees.

ALSO READ: Fabulous reads – YA book offers positive experience

Ridley lives in one of the few safe cities left in the world, protected by gigantic floating arxium plates that reflect the harsh and wild magics that now plague the world.

She keeps her magic hidden. Most of the time. Without realising its importance, Ridley steals an object that places dozens of people’s lives and risk. She has no choice but to partner up with her latest victim and recover the stolen artifact and make right her wrong.

I must admit, I was apprehensive when I picked up the Elemental Thief. Would it be better than Creepy Hollow? How does the magic system work? Will I enjoy it without the plethora of characters I have come to love?

Let me put your mind at ease – the book is wonderful, thought-provoking, witty, filled with charm and has a beautifully flawed main character that brings an otherworldly charm to the start of what I can only guess to be a wonderful new series!

Rachel Morgan lives in Cape Town and, as South Africans, we are lucky enough to grab signed copies of her paperbacks, delivered to our front door, from her site https://rachelmorganbooks.com.
