SOUTH Africa commemorates Women’s month in August and will be celebrated annually as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.
It is essential to reflect on the achievements of women, and the imperative role that women of all races play in South Africa.
But who exactly are the women who walk mother earth daily: They are the very human beings who gave birth to every individual walking our planet today, who deserve to be respected, have the right to live free from violence, slavery and discrimination, not be silenced, have the right to be educated, to own property; to vote; have a job and be recognised in senior roles, and to earn a fair and equal salary.
Women are entitled globally to these rights, yet almost everywhere around the world, women and girls are still denied these rights simply because of their gender.
We must not forget, that women have the same physical and mental ability in coping with normal stress of life, can work productively and is able to make a positive contribution to her community as men.
Women must stand united globally and win the rights for women in allowing the opportunity to change how countries and communities work.
This involves the changing of the laws and policies, winning the hearts and investing in women’s organisations and movements.
The United Nations Headquarters based in New York needs more women seated to inspire more.
Our South African men who wish to take advantage of our women when it comes to abuse, will face the full might of the law – a zero tolerance approach will be adopted.
More men need to come on board and appreciate our women, and realise the positive role and impact they have on every individuals life daily.
