Eco champs monitor safe nappy disposal

A nappies pilot project was launched and the eco champs joined by Department of Environmental Affairs official, Shauna Costley delivered ‘wheelie’ bins to Clermont community ablution blocks.

CLERMONT Eco Champs are continuing with their awareness on the safe disposal of nappies.

On Saturday, 28 July, the nappies pilot project was launched during the ‘Amanzi Ayimpilo’ (‘Water is Life’) event at Christianenburg Stadium in Clermont.

To make this project a success, the Eco Champs conduct their research using prepared questionnaires with residents on their views, expenses and experiences with nappies.

The determined warriors did not waste any time in putting their research into action as on Wednesday, 1 August, they went around the Clermont area delivering 19 ‘wheelie’ bins to 16 community ablution blocks and two creches in Clermont and one creche in New Germany which were donated by Durban Solid Waste (DSW).

Department of Environmental Affairs official, Shauna Costley, was also present to witness this delivery and get up to date with the work done through Aller River Pilot Project to clean the rivers.

Project manger, Nick Swan, said Verigreen in Pinetown generously contributed 1 000 plastic bags to transport the used nappies from the collection points to landfills through the regular DSW waste collection services.

“The pilot will be closely monitored and the results shared with all stakeholders, for possible adaptation and roll-out in other areas. The safe disposal of disposable nappies has rapidly become a major global solid waste disposal challenge within the past three decades.

“In Clermont, as in many parts of Durban, nappies are regularly dumped in and next to the river, in open spaces, and in toilets, leading to blocked sewers and harmful sewage spillages.”
