Help expand Mazarat’s reach
Mazarat Animal Rescue needs your help to complete its upgrade and refurbishment project.
MAZARAT Animal Rescue in Waterfall is undergoing a major revamp which includes rebuilding a set of rescue kennels and the introduction of an on-site rescue centre.
The registered NPO and PBO is a pro-quality life rescue shelter.
The chairman of the organisation, Andy Blazeby, and a team of staff, worked tirelessly to knock down the previous structures. They cut and cleaned the blocks that could be saved for reuse and dug trenches for drainage.
“Why are we rebuilding rescue kennels? The unfinished state they were in was not conducive to healthy living for dogs,” said Blazeby. “But in order for this project to come to fruition, we desperately need financial and community support.”
The end goal is to create a rescue centre with 14 kennels, a quarantine/recovery kennel, an outdoor run, a grooming and first aid room, a kitchenette, a food storage room and office. This will be run by Mazarat Animal Rescue staff member and kennel assistant, Mbongeni Gumede, committee members and a part-time team of volunteers.

The BuildIt Pinetown branch generously covered two thirds of the organisation’s materials invoice for the first section.
“We are so grateful to them for their support. This is what community is all about. We are proud to be working with BuildIt Pinetown and they deserve the recognition for supporting rescues and their community,” said Blazeby.
Chris Barnard of Handyman Durban stepped up and sponsored labour to help start the building process.
Blazeby said the rescue centre in the Waterfall area was much-needed.
“We are a small rescue organisation but field countless e-mails and phone calls weekly, if not daily, from folks in desperation. These innocent pets find themselves homeless due to deaths in the family, job losses, emigration, old owners not able to take companions into homes and even divorce. It is very sad, but we persevere with what little we have, to help as many as we can,” he said.
