Durban men sentenced for child pornography offences

Three men from KZN have been given sentences for crimes relating to child pornography.

DURBAN Regional Court has sentenced Jacquees Rheeder, 35 and Tiaan Malan, 31, to five years imprisonment each for child pornography.

According to KZN SAPS media centre, charges against the two men were investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit investigators from Durban Central and Pinetown after they received information from FCS Unit in Gauteng.

Rheeder was arrested at his home in Riverview Road in Waterfall, Hillcrest when child pornography images were found at his home in November 2016.

Malan was arrested at his place of residence in Ridge Road, Durban after child pornographic images were seized in April 2017.

Newcastle case

Meanwhile, in a separate case, the Newcastle Regional Court has effectively sentenced a 34-year-old man to 30 years imprisonment in relation to a case which had been under investigation since January 2015.

In the Newcastle case, police received intelligence of a young girl, 14, in possession of nude pictures of children in Newcastle.

The device was seized from the girl who has not been named. According to a statement released by police on Wednesday, 25 July, the investigation by Newcastle (FCS) Unit detectives discovered that she had been taking nude pictures of two nine and ten year old girls, and then sending them to her boyfriend.

Further investigations revealed that the accused was sleeping with a 14-year-old child. A search warrant was obtained and the accused was arrested. His home was searched and all hard drives with a number of child pornography images were seized.

He was taken to court where he was tried and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for having sex with a minor, 10 years for sexual grooming and 10 years for possession of images of child pornography. Five years on each sentence was suspended for five years.

According to police, the name of all of the men involved in these cases will be entered in the register of sexual offenders and will be declared unfit to work with children.
