Birches’ learners make sarmies for the homeless

On Friday, just before snack time, the little ones got to work and made sandwiches which they were not allowed to eat.

TO continue Mandela’s legacy, Birches Pre-Primary School learners made sandwiches for the homeless and underprivileged with help from the teachers.

The school asked parents to support this initiative by bringing bread, margarine, jam and peanut butter.

On Friday, just before snack time, the little ones got to work and made sandwiches which they were not allowed to eat.

“We did this to teach them to appreciate and be grateful for what they have and how it feels like to be hungry,” said principal of Birches, Scilla Edmonds.

“Each teacher discussed with the children where they were going to take the sandwiches and all the children worked well together with so much joy and dedication,” said Edmonds.

The sandwiches and remaining bread and spreads were donated to Westville Methodist Church soup kitchen, an orphanage in Ntshongweni and other sandwiches were distributed in Malvern.
