DA leader calls for drop in fuel price

Democratic Alliance leader, Mmusi Maimane, appealed to government to drop the fuel price by R1 per litre.

AT a joint press conference in Tshwane today, the leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mmusi Maimane, called for government to drop the fuel levy by R1 per litre.

“In addition to a one percentage point increase in VAT to 15 per cent, increases in Income Tax, increases in “sin tax” and an increase in sugar tax, South Africans have been hit with no less than four fuel price increases in four consecutive months – with another increase set for August,” said Maimane.

He declared this as being unsustainable, citing that poor South Africans were already stretched to breaking point by the stagnant economy.

“Government cannot expect poor and unemployed South Africans to foot the bill for their mismanagement of our economy,” he stressed.

He called on President Cyril Ramaphosa and his government to implement the following:

1.Reduce the RAF and general fuel levies by R1 per litre or 20 per cent.

2.Table an urgent debate in Parliament to consider the current structure of the RAF and General Fuel Levies.

3.Place the RAF under independent and external administration.

Maimane called on all South Africans to join him in collective mass protest outside the National Treasury’s offices in Tshwane on Tuesday, 31 July at 10am.

“We will be calling for an immediate reduction in the fuel levies. If enough people add their voices, they won’t be able to ignore us,” he said.
