Agriculture students spread their wings

The six hard working and dedicated students will spend 10 months in the state as part of the USA community college initiative.

A WORLD of opportunity awaits six Mpumalanga Agriculture students who will fly to America before the end of July.

Elangeni TVET College held a send-off event on Friday attended by US embassy representative, Susan Knowles. Principal of Elangeni, Zodwa Aryetey, said this is a great achievement for the college.

As the American academic year begins in late August, four of the students will leave on Friday, 13 July and two on Sunday, 15 July.

“This is a first group of students selected for the USA Community College Initiative (CCI). We do have partnerships with US Embassy, but its usually the management that gets a chance to go to the USA so sending our students there it a great honour. We are very proud of them, their hard work and dedication has definitely paid off,” said Aryetey.

“The programme will provide our students with a non-degree, academic-year at a USA community college. They will benefit as it is designed to build the participants’ technical skills in applied fields, enhance their leadership capabilities and strengthen their English language proficiency.”

She said people should know that Elangeni College in not run by National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and it not a place where there are always protests, but it is an environment where young people’s dream can come true.

One of the students, Sindiswa Zuma, said she and the whole group were so excited about this opportunity as it is their first time going overseas.

“Although I am a bit nervous about being on a plane, I am actually looking forward to the new experiences, seeing other places and meeting other people from different countries as it won’t just be us and Americans.

She said she will forever treasure this opportunity.

“I am grateful to Elangeni College for uplifting us. I grew up in the valley and attended disadvantaged schools. I never imagined that I would ever have a chance to study overseas,” she said.
